Previously, on November 22, U.S. President Joe Biden extended for one year a 2018 executive order declaring Nicaragua to be “an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.”

This foreign policy measure was justified by arguing that the administration of the President Daniel Ortega allegedly continues to weaken Nicaragua’s democratic institutions, rule of law, and economy, all of which “continue to pose a threat.” Below is the statement from the Venezuelan Foreign Affairs Ministry:

“The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela expresses its solidarity with the Nicaraguan people and government and rejects the renewal of the infamous executive order that designates this sister nation as an unusual and extraordinary threat to the U.S. national security and foreign policy, thus justifying the illegal coercive measures against the Nicaraguan people.

It is unacceptable that the country that historically invaded Sandino’s homeland with its troops, supported the bloody Somoza dictatorship, and fueled the violence of the Contras, now seeks to accuse the Nicaraguan people and Government of Reconciliation and National Unity of being a threat.

With this executive order, the U.S. once again demonstrates its disregard for international law and its insatiable thirst to destabilize governments that defend their sovereignty and dignity. Under this pretext, it subjects the Nicaraguan people to criminal measures while cloaking its imperialist interventionism in impunity.

The Bolivarian people and government reiterate their unwavering support and solidarity with comrade President and Commander Daniel Ortega and comrade Vice President Rosario Murillo, and they join the global condemnation of this renewed aggression, convinced that the people of Carlos Fonseca and Ruben Dario will continue to steadfastly follow the path of development and national peace.”
